Medical training and research

Dr. Giorgio Pietramaggiori obtained his MD summa cum laude from the University of Padua, Italy. He then studied for his PhD. in Tissue Engineering while working at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a Harvard University hospital in Boston.

Plastic surgery training

Dr. Pietramaggiori trained in plastic surgery in Switzerland between the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) and Lausanne (CHUV), where he was Head of Plastic Surgery for two years.

Following his training, to further his specialization and knowledge, he visited several internationally renowned medical experts in the field of aesthetic surgery and migraine and peripheral nerve surgery.

Publications and inventions

Dr. Pietramaggiori is a researcher and inventor. Dr. Pietramaggiori is the author of numerous scientific publications. In particular, he has contributed an article to the most prestigious medical journal, the "New England Journal of Medicine". He is the author of several international patents. He has also written several chapters in plastic surgery books, including a chapter in the reference book “Plastic Surgery” 3rd edition, 2013 (BMA Medical Book Awards 1st Prize Award Winner in Surgical Specialties).

Among his inventions, he has developed a new surface for breast implants that solves a number of problems posed by current silicone implants.

International academic recognition

Dr. Pietramaggiori has been invited several times to various countries around the world to present his studies. He has been awarded prestigious prizes, such as the 3M-fellowship award from the American Wound Healing Society and the Young Investigator Award from the European Tissue Repair Society.

Professors Orgill (Plastic surgery, Harvard Medical school) and Murray (Plastic surgery, Harvard Medical school, winner of the Nobel Prize for the first human organ transplant) wanted to reward his innovative approach, by nominating him for the TR35, the annual list published by the MIT Technology Review which names the 35 most innovative people of the year, aged under 35.

National Academic Recognition

His dedication to teaching has led him to tutor over 25 doctoral and master’s theses of medical students from diverse backgrounds. In 2013 he was appointed Privat Docent at the University of Lausanne. Since 2019, Dr. Pietramaggiori has been Visiting Professor at the University of Padua in Italy, teaching aesthetic surgery and peripheral nerve and migraine surgery.

Teaching

Dr. Pietramaggiori organizes international courses to teach fellow surgeons the principles of aesthetic surgery, peripheral nerve and migraine surgery, and hyaluronic acid injection techniques.

Dr. Pietramaggiori is invited as a visiting professor at leading plastic surgery centers to present his innovative approach to plastic surgery and research.

Dr. Pietramaggiori is one of the main opinion leaders in the field of new minimally invasive approaches to plastic surgery, and contributes to the development and dissemination of new technologies to improve results and reduce risks. He has been interviewed by several national and international newspapers, radio and television channels for his highly specialized discoveries and surgeries.

Certifications

Dr. Pietramaggiori’s certifications include the American Medical Boards (USMLE), the European Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (EBOPRAS) and the Swiss board of plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery (FMH).

Volunteer work

Dr Pietramaggiori takes part in volunteer plastic surgery missions around the world, for example in Pakistan after the 2005 earthquake, where he developed a $1 wound-care kit for injured patients for the World Bank. Together with a group of colleagues from South Korea and Dr. Scherer, he takes part in an annual mission to Uzbekistan to help the population and train local doctors in the principles of reconstructive plastic surgery. He takes an active part in various charity events and has run the Boston Marathon three times in aid of the Brigham and Women's Hospital Foundation.

Dr. Pietramaggiori is a member of the Swiss Society of Plastic Surgery (SSCPRE), the American Peripheral nerve society (ASPN), and the European board of plastic and reconstructive surgery (EBOPRAS).
